Oconee Blotter

The Oconee County Sheriff's Office reported the following incidents:

Arrests: On May 18, a deputy on patrol learned from dispatch that a person traveling on Old Bishop Road reported seeing a red vehicle stop next to a young man on a bicycle, and that two people jumped out and attacked the cyclist. The deputy arrived to find a 19-year-old Bishop man standing next to his bicycle. He told the deputy that 17-year-old Raymond Cole McDaniel and a man he didn't know had attacked him. He said McDaniel and his companion are members of the Bloods gang who falsely accused him of being a Crips member. The deputy drove to Hardigree Bell Road and saw deputy Clark Sparrow standing at the red vehicle speaking to two people, including a 20-year-old woman. Said she was driving the vehicle when the two men told her to pull over near the bicyclist. When she was asked where the two assailants were, she said they took off running when they saw Sparrow's car. Another man in the vehicle told the deputies he never participated in the attack. The other suspect was identified as Preston Pike, 19, of Bishop. The deputy called Pike's girlfriend to get him to surrender, and he showed up at the county jail about 11:45 p.m. Pike denied both the attack and being in the vehicle, but when confronted with the other witnesses' statements, Pike said he only pushed the rider off the bicycle and slapped him. Shortly after 2 a.m. May 19, deputies arrested McDaniel at his Hardigree Bell Road home. On the way to jail, he told deputies he only opened the vehicle door so Pike could get out and attack the bicyclist. Both McDaniel and Pike were charged with battery and affray.

Arrest: On May 19, Sgt. Byron Smith, Cpl. Shane Partain and a third deputy went to a Rankin Road home after they received a tip that Jabbaris L. Brown, 26, was inside. Brown was wanted on seven criminal charges stemming from an attack on a woman. When Partain opened the door, the deputies heard glass breaking in a bedroom. Two ran outside to the rear window while the other went into the bedroom and found Brown standing on a bed with his forearm bleeding. The deputy drew his pistol and ordered Brown to the floor, and Brown finally complied. He was taken to an Athens hospital for treatment, then to jail where he also was charged with obstruction.

Fraud: On May 19, a woman said an unidentified man called her mother claiming he was her grandson and that he needed her to wire him $1,100 because he was in Canada and had a car wreck. The grandmother said she didn't know how to wire money and he would have to speak with his mother, but the caller said he didn't want his mother to know about the wreck. The woman said the man didn't sound like her grandson, so she called her daughter, who came to her house. When the man called back, he was confronted by the daughter and disconnected the call.

Arrest: On May 19, a deputy was dispatched about 5:15 p.m. to the parking lot of the Waffle House on Epps Bridge Parkway. He saw a 36-year-old Dacula woman picking up papers and crying because of a problem she had with a woman from Comer. The Comer woman explained that she wanted to repossess a car she had sold to the Dacula woman, who was behind on her payments. The Dacula woman said she offered $200, but the Comer woman wanted the car back. The women were advised to take the matter to civil court.

Complaint: On May 13, deputy Clark Sparrow was patrolling on Daniells Bridge Road about 1 a.m. when he saw a pickup filled with construction tools enter Lake Welbrook subdivision. Sparrow followed and saw the pickup pull into a driveway on Scarlett Oak Circle. The vehicle's lights were turned off, and when Sparrow approached it on foot, he found it unoccupied, but he could hear people running in the backyard. Backup deputies were called, and the home's resident said he was awakened by someone knocking on his window. As more deputies arrived, three people walked out of the woods with their hands in the air. They were identified as juveniles. One admitted he had taken his father's work truck without permission and that when they saw the deputy following them, they panicked and pulled into the driveway of a friend to escape. They admitted they were smoking an herb called Elations. The parents of all three were contacted, and the three were released without charges.
